Legacy Conservation Safaris is designed around conservation immersion, active field projects and limited departures. You still experience the beauty, wildlife and comfort of a high-quality African safari, but the journey is shaped by science, access and measurable impact. You get to meet the people doing the work and understand the projects your safari helps fund.

Safari and conservation are more than the Big Five and although we do traverse through Big Five territory, each species has its own unique patterns and behaviors, which we feel adds to the overall spontaneity and excitement of a safari.

The journey spends several days in Big Five territory, including Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Manyoni Private Game Reserve, with game drives and walking safaris where lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino are all present. Wildlife is wild, so no sighting can ever be guaranteed, but the reserves we visit hold healthy populations of all five and our guides know the landscapes intimately. Rhino, in particular, are central to the conservation work you take part in.

KwaZulu-Natal includes low-risk malaria areas, so anti-malaria precautions are worth discussing with your doctor, along with routine and recommended travel vaccinations for South Africa. Requirements depend on your home country, medical history and exact travel dates, so we always recommend consulting a travel clinic or your physician four to six weeks before departure. We are happy to talk through what to expect on the ground and will share detailed pre-departure health guidance once you book.

Departures are limited because we follow the rhythm of conservation work. Rhino horn trimming, eagle monitoring, reptile activity, field surveys and specialist availability all happen in real seasons. Our itinerary is built around those windows so that the experience stays authentic, rare and connected to the work.

Last year, 25% of each ticket went back into conservation-linked work. That included support for rhino protection, crowned eagle research, reptile and amphibian conservation, and protected area levies. You'll also receive a post-trip conservation report so you can understand what your journey helped support.

You will absolutely see wildlife up close in the wild throughout the journey, on game drives, walking safaris and boat cruises, as animals move naturally around you. What we do not do is stage or manufacture encounters for entertainment. The one exception is close access to animals within professional conservation work, such as a rhino horn-trimming operation, which always happens under expert supervision with the welfare of the animal and the needs of the project coming first.

Only where it is appropriate, ethical, professionally supervised and relevant to the conservation work. Most participation involves observing, learning, recording, tracking, understanding equipment, asking questions and seeing how conservation decisions are made in the field.

KwaZulu-Natal is one of Africa's most underrated safari regions and one not usually highlighted by traditional safari operators. As a place that is less commercialized than many better-known bush circuits, your overall experience often feels more personal and its story more distinctive. In terms of landscape and diversity, KwaZulu-Natal offers coastal forest, wetlands, Big Five wilderness, historic rhino conservation landscapes, rich culture and extraordinary biodiversity within one province. Not only is this quite rare but it also allows for maximum immersion in a variety of landscapes across a relatively short distance.

Crowned eagles, snakes, reptiles and amphibians play vital roles in healthy ecosystems. They are also often underfunded and misunderstood, which is why our aim is to give you the chance to learn from species experts and support work that rarely receives mainstream safari attention.

Rhino protection is one important part of the journey, but our model is broader. A safari with us supports multiple conservation causes, including rhino protection, crowned eagle research, reptile and amphibian conservation, protected area levies and field-based education.
